Online Degree For Me

How Do Employers Look at an Online Degree

One of the biggest reasons people want to get a college degree is to get a better job or advance in their field.  As a busy society, we are always looking for ways to do this faster and more easily.

Getting an online degree is one excellent way to fit your education in around your busy lifestyle.  However, you may be aware than getting your degree online holds a certain stigma for some people.  Before you jump into any program, you need to think about how an employer will view an online degree.

No two employers are the same, but it is safe to say that the view of online degrees is looking up.  Many qualified applicants are graduating from online programs, and they have broken the mold for you.  Still, there are many things that are taken into consideration by employers and they are things you should think about before you sign up.

One huge factor to consider is that the Internet is relatively new.  If you are a young person it is likely that you grew up online and can’t imagine another way of being!  However, older employers may not understand the Internet or see it as a valuable tool.  These employers may look down on your online degree and potentially disqualify you because of it.

Still, the majority of business owners are up on the trends and realize the value of the Internet.  They know and use it everyday themselves.  Businesses themselves use e-mail everyday and online conference calls to communicate with people that are far away.  These people know that getting an online degree is a way for you to fit a quality education in on your own time.

One thing you need to make sure of is that any college you are looking into is accredited.  There are some scam artists out there who want to take your money and leave you with a shoddy or incomplete education.   You should avoid an unaccredited program with a ten-foot pole.  You need to look into an accredited school has been proven to be of high quality.

It can definitely work in your favor if you attend an accredited university’s program online.  The employer will recognize the name of the university and see that it has value.  Even an older employer will recognize the name of a university that has a physical campus as well as an online one.

If you get your college degree from a place that they do not recognize your application may very well be discarded.  Attending a reputable institution it will ease the mind of your employer.

Another thing employers will want to know is how well you applied yourself to your online program.  It can be so easy to spend a day checking your e-mail, surfing forums, and chatting with friends.  There are so many ways to “waste time” online.  When you are taking college courses online you have to focus!  If you do not focus on your online college degree, it will show in your grades and affect your career.

As you probably know, employers really want to know your what your performance was in your college program.  If you have a GPA of 1.5 it won’t matter where you got your degree, you simply won’t get hired!  If you apply yourself and work hard you are a much better job candidate.

Please, take your online college degree very seriously.  Do well in your courses and it will show.  You will have mastered the required skill sets for the position you are seeking.

There are many things that can impact an employer’s view of your online degree. It may be true that a small number of employers will be ready to chuck your application aside once they see you achieved your degree online.  To the vast majority of them, it won’t make a difference once you’ve proven yourself!
