Online Degree For Me

How to Pick Which Online College is Right for You

As soon as you make the decision to continue your education online you will be bombarded with choices.  Doing a Google search for “online college” gives you 391,000,000 results!  That is enough to overwhelm even the most dedicated person.

Picking which online college is right for you does not have to be a scary process.  All you have to do is give it a little research and thought. Each college offers something different to their students and it is up to you to decide which the best fit is.

The first thing you need to think about is why you want to get a higher degree.  What do you need to do to advance your career?  Choose an online college based on your needs.

Do not think of an online degree as the easy way out.  You’ll still have to devote a lot of time studying and completing your coursework.  Examine your schedule to make sure you have time, and which college will fit into your plans the best.

Some online colleges have strict requirements you must meet before you’re allowed to enroll.  Others will accept you as long as you pay the tuition fee.  Think about what qualifications you have against the requirements of the schools you are looking into.

Don’t think that you’re the only one who needs to “pass the test” so to speak.  You don’t want to give thousands of dollars and hours upon hours of your time to a college that isn’t reliable.

Research is important to do before you take that leap into online higher education.  Many people do reviews of these courses online.  It would be a good idea for you to check out these reviews to make sure a certain online course is right for you.

The importance of researching online colleges cannot be stressed enough.  The college itself may be several states away making it impossible for you to check it out first hand.  Do a search for “your college here” review and you should find some results from students who’ve been through the program.

If you see a lot of disgruntled ex-students, it may be a sign that you need to do further research to find a different college.  Glowing reports are a positive sign that the online college you’re looking into is a good one.

One thing you can do is contact former students of the college.  If they’ve posted their experience on a blog or message board there is probably a way for you to contact them.  Ask them specific questions about their online experience with the college.  Do not hesitate to ask them what they are doing with their degree now.  If they are successful and know others who found success with the program, it is likely that you’ll be able to do the same.

A reliable college should be accredited.  If a college is accredited, it means that it meets acceptable levels of quality.  If the school you are looking into is not accredited, you may have trouble transferring credits later on and you may not be getting a good education.

In addition to college quality you’ll want to take a look at their structure.  Class size should be a major factor in your decision.  You make think that taking a class online makes class size unimportant.  In reality, a professor has to read e-mail and grade papers, which takes as much time as a physical class.  A college with extremely large class sizes will not be able to give you the time and care that you deserve.

Curriculum is a huge factor when picking which online college is right for you.  If the curriculum seems fragmented and the course descriptions are shoddy or incomplete, it may be a sign that the college is not well put together.

Curriculum should be focused on giving you the tools you need to succeed in your career.  The books the professors recommend should be up to date and relevant to what you are learning.

Speaking of the professors, the college should have a link to professor biographies.  Check out where they went to college and what they have done in their careers.  If they give an e-mail address, think of some questions you have about their subject or teaching.
