Should I Enroll in an Online College
There are many of us who want to attend college classes. It may be that we want to
advance our career, or perhaps we want to go in an entirely different direction with our lives. The problem is that many of us do not have the time it takes to attend college courses. A great solution to this problem is to enroll in an online college.
Traditional college courses require you to drive to campus and sit through hours long lectures or forum style classes. You are usually required to attend all classes, and attend them on time. For those of us who have families, full time jobs, and other responsibilities, this is simply not
possible.
Attending an online college eliminates this problem. You still have to be a hard
worker, but you can do it on your own time. Put the kids to bed, then do your online college
class. Have a free hour at work? Go to your
online college class. The flexibility this provides is almost limitless.
In addition to eliminating time constraints, some people want to go to an online college because there are no programs that
interest them where they live. This is especially true for those who live in a more rural
community. It is impractical to travel many miles or even states to go to a college
class. With an online college you can simply turn on your computer and still receive high
quality instruction. These courses are very flexible and require no commute!
One reason you may NOT want to enroll in an online college is if you have trouble motivating yourself. You will not have a professor in the room to remind you to do the research for your paper. You will not have other students in the room to bounce ideas off of. It is very important that you always schedule in time to complete your coursework. There is very little “hand holding” in an online college course.
One thing you should do is print out your syllabus and project
requirements and make a schedule for yourself. Of course, we’re all about flexibility, so be sure
to allow yourself some wiggle room. When you’re working, stay focused! There are those who think that attending an online college is easier, but it can be very challenging for
those who lack the skills they need to focus.
Even though no one is physically there to support you, you can still find plenty of help online. Most online colleges have a messageboard or chat room for you to communicate with others. This allows for great classroom discussion, just a little bit differently than you are used
to! In fact, you may be required to post answers to certain questions posed by the
professor or other students. This creates dynamic classroom interaction online.
Most people considering this route have the equipment that is required to attend an online college. It may be a good idea to get high speed Internet before investing in your course. That way, you can be
assured you won’t miss anything important from other students or your professor.
Your professors should also make a point to be readily available to
you via e-mail or on the phone. Remember, they are getting paid to teach this course the same way
they would be in a physical classroom. Make sure you use them and get feedback from
them. It is possible that they will become a contact you can use for job prospects in the
future.
Before you choose an online college it is vital that you research
the program and make sure it is right for you.
The college you choose should be accredited and
provide a lot of support to their students. Online colleges are great for those who need instant access and information. They can fit easily into your daily schedule and still allow you to have time to be with your family and work
at your day job.
